These Glamour Girls ** (1939, Lew Ayres, Lana Turner, Tom Brown, Richard Carlson, Jane Bryan, Anita Louise) – Classic Movie Review 7801

Director S Sylvan Simon’s 1939 romantic comedy drama These Glamour Girls highlights class difference when a dance hall hostess girl (Lana Turner) from the wrong side of the tracks is casually invited by a drunken rich young man (Ayres) to a big college dance, though by the time she arrives he has forgotten all about any class difference, indeed he has forgotten he even asked her. Ultimately and unsurprisingly, this simple, light-hearted escapist fare all ends romantically.

Turner grabs her chance to shine as Jane Thomas, the working-class girl who fights back when scorning posh girls (Anita Louise, Ann Rutherford, Mary Beth Hughes and Jane Bryan) look down at her when she shows up at the college function and won’t go away, though Ayres tries to dump her.

It is only a minor, low-budget ($403,000) effort, but an excellent cast makes the most of a pleasant mix of comedy and drama in MGM’s old-fashioned, easy-going style.

Also in the cast are Lew Ayres, Richard Carlson, Marsha Hunt, Tom Brown, Owen Davis, Ernest Truex, Peter Lind Hayes, Don Castle, Tom Collins, Henry Kolker, Denny Moore, Mary Forbes, Nella Walker and Robert Emmett Keane.

These Glamour Girls is directed by S Sylvan Simon, runs 79 minutes, is made and released by MGM, is written by Jane Hall and Marion Parsonnet, from the story by Jane Hall in Cosmopolitan Magazine, is shot in black and white by Alfred Gilks, is produced by Sam Zimbalist and is scored by Edward Ward and David Snell.

In a desperate and pathetic attempt to sell it, MGM screamed: ‘ Sensational Story of Dance Hall Beauty Crashing Society’s Playgrounds!’
