Thief of Hearts **** (1984, Steven Bauer, Barbara Williams, John Getz) – Classic Movie Review 9237

Director Douglas Day Stewart’s excellent 1984 noir romantic thriller Thief of Hearts stars Steven Bauer as Scott Muller, a burglar smouldering with lust for Mickey Davis (Barbara Williams), a young married woman whose intimate diary he steals unwittingly.

Mickey willingly gets caught up in Scott’s sexual shenanigans, unaware that he is the man who has broken into her house, read her diaries and knows all her sexual fantasies and desires.

The tantalising set-up is fascinatingly developed by dèbut director Stewart and convincingly played by the attractive star couple.

Andrew Laszlo’s chic visuals and Harold Faltermeyer’s score help to make this a sleek and steamy package, with great love scenes. Giorgio Moroder writes the music for ‘Thief of Hearts’ (lyrics by Keith Forsey and Melissa Manchester), performed by Melissa Manchester. Harold Faltermeyer performs the love theme from Thief of Hearts (instrumental).

Also in the cast are John Getz as Ray Davis, David Caruso, Christine Ebersole, George Wendt, Alan North, Romy Windsor and Joe Nesnow.

There are about 20 uses of the F word.

An unrated video release running an extra minute includes ‘foreign version love scenes’.

Thief of Hearts is directed by Douglas Day Stewart, runs 100 minutes, is made by Don Simpson/ Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Paramount Pictures, is released by Paramount, is written by Douglas Day Stewart, is shot in Metrocolor by Andrew Laszlo, is produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, is scored by Harold Faltermeyer and is designed by Edward Richardson.

Stewart did not direct another feature film for another five years until Listen to Me (1989), his only other movie so far. He wrote the scripts for The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, The Other Side of the Mountain: Part II, The Blue Lagoon, An Officer and a Gentleman and The Scarlet Letter.

Steven Bauer was born as Esteban Ernesto Echevarria on 2 December 1956 in Havana, Cuba. He is best known for Scarface (1983).
