The swift moving odd-couple (well odd-triple) 1989 slapstick comedy Three Fugitives is slickly directed by Francis Veber, who also writes the screenplay and bases it on his 1986 French farce film Les Fugitifs (with Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard).
Martin Short stars as incompetent gunman Ned Perry, who robs a bank to raise money for his daughter Meg Perry (cute little Sarah Rowland Doroff) and makes just released convict Lucas (Nick Nolte) go on the run with him and his daughter after police detective Dugan (James Earl Jones) deduces Lucas helped to plan the robbery.
Three Fugitives is kept going by the vigorous performances from both stars, though the more experienced Nolte outclasses Short, who unfortunately resorts to displays of sentimentality when he can’t get laughs.
Also in the cast are Alan Ruck, Kenneth McMillan, Bruce McGill, Lee Garlington, Sy Richardson, and Rocky Giordani.
Sarah Rowland Doroff was born in 1983. Three Fugitives is her only film, though she appeared on TV a couple of times in 1990.
