Richard Boleslawski is MGM’s surprise choice to direct the 1936 Western Three Godfathers, the third film version of Peter B Kyne’s old (true) story Marked Men, in which Chester Morris, Walter Brennan and Lewis Stone star as fugitives coming across a mother while crossing the desert and befriending her newly born baby. The three bank robbers then set out to escort the baby to New Jerusalem, Arizona.
Three Godfathers is extremely well performed, photographed and made, and it easily stands up to competition from the more famous John Ford version of Three Godfathers, which followed in 1948. It is shot in black and white by Joseph Ruttenberg.
Also in the cast are Irene Hervey, Sidney Toler, Dorothy Tree, Roger Imhof, John Sheehan, Willard Robertson, Victor Potel, Helen Brown, Robert Livingston, Harvey Clark and Virginia Brissac.
