Director A Edward Sutherland’s 1928 silent circus comedy film Tillie’s Punctured Romance stars W C Fields, Louise Fazenda, Chester Conklin and Mack Swain. Sadly, this film is presumed lost.

W C Fields stars as a circus ringmaster who plots to take over the circus by bumping off the circus owner (Chester Conklin) by caging him with the lions when World War One starts, in this believed to be funny old silent comedy with a sweet cast of expert comics. Louise Fazenda also stars as a runaway called Tillie, who goes to Frisbee’s Colossal Circus.

Although often called a remake, the W C Fields movie bears no resemblance to the 1914 film Tillie’s Punctured Romance aside from the shared title, though Chester Conklin and Mack Swain appear in both movies.

The cast are W C Fields as Ringmaster, Louise Fazenda as runaway Tillie, Chester Conklin as Circus Owner, Mack Swain as Tillie’s Father, Doris Hill as Heroine, Grant Withers as Hero, Tom Kennedy as Property Man, Babe London as Strong Woman, Billy Platt as Midge, Mickey Bennett, and Mike Rafetto.

Tillie’s Punctured Romance is directed by A Edward Sutherland, runs 57 minutes, is made by Christie Film Company, is released by Paramount Pictures, is written by Monte Brice and Keene Thompson, is shot by Charles P Boyle and William Wheeler, is produced by Al Christie.
