Director Peter Hyams’s exciting 1994 sci-fi action thriller is one of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best movies, made and performed with lots of gusto. And it is written by Mark Verheiden and Mike Richardson (based on their Dark Horse comic book series) with some considerable flair and imagination.
Van Damme stars as Timecop Max Walker, who nips back in time from 2004 and in the nick of time deals with the slimeball super-villain, Senator Aaron McComb (Ron Silver).
Van Damme is in great shape and on excellent form as the hero, while Silver gives a really polished performance of unusual extravagance for him, making a great villain. Plus there’s a good, costly-looking production and pounding direction by Hyams with plenty of strong action, fine stunts and a big finish.
Also in the cast are Mia Sara, Bruce McGill, Gloria Reuben, Scott Bellis, Jason Schombing, Scott Lawrence, Kenneth Welsh, Brent Woolsey, Brad Loree, Shane Kelly, Richard Faraci and Kevin McNulty.
A TV series followed in 1997. In 2015 a reboot is in development.
