The always likeable screen performer Kirstie Alley gives a spirited star comedy turn in director Melanie Mayron’s colourful, amusing 1997 Disney family film Toothless, providing pleasantly offbeat entertainment.
When dentist Dr Katherine Lewis (Kirstie Alley) dies in a bike accident, she is sent to Limbo (‘Oh! this isn’t hell, is it?’) and assigned to Tooth Fairy duties, collecting kids’ teeth, before she can be admitted into Heaven.
Written by Mark S Kaufman, Toothless is a bit toothless, maybe, but it is always quite sweet and good fun, not least in part through the efforts of the nice cast, including Lynn Redgrave, Dale Midkiff and Ross Malinger.
Director Mayron plays Mindy and Eileen Brennan is a welcome presence as the Limbo judge.
It was originally part of The Wonderful World of Disney TV strand, and the episode was first aired on 5 October 1997 in the US and 21 December 2000 in the UK, and it premiered on video in several countries.
Also in the cast are Kathryn Zalremba, Marcus Toji, Kimberly Scott, John P Connolly, Catlin Adams, Patrick Kerr, Jake Richardson and Zack Duhame.
