The truth is that the teen supernatural horror slasher flick movie Truth Or Dare is ridiculous, nonsensical, unconvincing and just no good.
A dull and dreary group of American college students get together to play a game of Truth Or Dare, but if anyone tells a lie or refuses a dare, they die. Usually a dare means they are dared to kill someone, so it’s best to answer ‘Truth’ but you can only say ‘Truth’ twice in a row, then it’s automatically ‘Dare’ and then someone dies. For some reason they also have to keep playing, and so the remaining quartet of players need to find a way to escape from their waking nightmare.
Truth Or Dare is the latest would-be spine-chiller from Jason Blum, producer of happy Death Day, Get Out, Split and the Purge franchise. It does have a concept and a title, but that does not translate into an effective movie, with signs of strain, effort and tiredness throughout. You can just see the script-writers’ long sweaty nights of re-writing to try to polish it up.
All in vain. They have made it busy, but it remains boring – dead on screen. Death stalks the cinema! Yes, it does limp along to its 100 minutes end quite eventfully though, but without any conviction, authority or entertainment value. It doesn’t even have a finish (and not much of a start either).
Naturally it is all very grisly and unpleasant, and it just shows how good the similar death stalks teens movie Final Destination was back in 2000.
The lack of a finish is a bit scary because there is room for sequel. I dare them not to make another one.
By the way, so much is given away in the trailer, you don’t need to see the movie.
It stars Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Sophia Ali, Landon Liboiron, Nolan Gerard Funk, and Sam Lerner.
