Two Girls on Broadway [Choose Your Partner] ** (1940, Lana Turner, Joan Blondell, George Murphy, Kent Taylor) – Classic Movie Review 10,335

Director S Sylvan Simon’s 1940 MGM musical Two Girls on Broadway [Choose Your Partner] stars Lana Turner, Joan Blondell and George Murphy, along with Kent Taylor. It is a remake of The Broadway Melody (1929).

The dancing double act of showbiz sisters Molly and Pat Mahoney (Blondell and Turner) is put into jeopardy when they both fall for the same man (Murphy), with the further complication of a wealthy wolf (Kent Taylor) with a slew of ex-wives, chasing after Pat, who goes out with him as she doesn’t want to hurt Molly.

Two Girls on Broadway is a chirpy, friendly and pleasant but minor and undistinguished musical heavily reliant on the appeal of the undeniable allure of the two female stars. The two male stars may be talented but here they lack charm.

The highlight is ‘My Wonderful One Let’s Dance’ (written by Nacio Herb Brown, Arthur Freed and Roger Edens), an amusing piano number danced by Turner and Murphy (as Eddie Kerns). It is also played on piano, sung and danced by Murphy and reprised with Murphy singing. Also ‘Broadway’s Still Broadway’ (written by Harry Revel and Ted Fetter) is played on piano by Murphy and danced by Blondell and Turner.

Also in the cast are Wallace Ford, Lloyd Corrigan, Richard Lane, Otto Hahn, Don Wilson, Charles Wagenheim, Eddie Borden, Hilary Brooke, Heinie Conklin, Jimmy Conlin, Adrienne D’Ambricourt, Hal K Dawson, Jack Dawson, Joe Devlin, Lester Dorr, Dick Elliott, Edward Gargan, David Lloyd, Edward Hearn, Mary McAvoy, Tom McGuire, Bert Moorhouse, Edward Peil Sr, Eddie Phillips, Cyril Ring, Herb Vigran and Carol Wayne.
