Director Stuart Burge’s splendid 1963 British film Uncle Vanya is a rousing, impeccably acted adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s 1899 classic play.

Other filmed Laurence Olivier stage performances include Othello (1965) and The Dance of Death (1969).
The cast are Laurence Olivier as Dr Mikhail Lvovich Astrov, Joan Plowright as Sofia Alexandrovna Serebryakov (Sonya), Michael Redgrave as Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky (Uncle Vanya), Sybil Thorndike as Marina Timofeevna, Max Adrian as Professor Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov, Lewis Casson as Ilya Ilych Telegin, Fay Compton as Maria Vasilyevna Voynitsky, Rosemary Harris as Helena Andreyevna Serebryakov (Yelena) and Robert Lang as Yefim.
