Under Siege 2: Dark Territory ** (1995, Steven Seagal, Eric Bogosian, Katherine Heigl, Everett McGill, Morris Chestnut, Kurtwood Smith, Nick Mancuso, Brenda Bakke) – Classic Movie Review 13,130

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory

The 1995 American action thriller film Under Siege 2: Dark Territory brings Steven Seagal back as ex-Navy SEAL Casey Ryback, with the high-spirited action this time set on board a train.

Sequelitis sets in for this less thrilling 1995 American action-thriller sequel to the 1992 hit Under Siege, with Steven Seagal back as ship’s cook and former Navy SEAL Casey Ryback, who this time is on a train (taking his young niece Katherine Heigl to Los Angeles on vacation) travelling through the Rocky Mountains from Denver to LA when it is hijacked by arms superbrain Travis Dane (Eric Bogosian)’s terrorists.

Under Siege 2 is the formula as before, playing almost like a re-run on rails instead of on the ocean, but mostly with everything stodgy and unexciting, particularly the daft dialogue. However, it still has its moments of high-spirited action, well handled by director Geoff Murphy.

Nick Mancuso as Tom Breaker, Andy Romano as Admiral Bates and Dale Dye as Captain Garza reprise their roles from Under Siege.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory is directed by Geoff Murphy, runs 100 minutes, is made by Regency Enterprises, New Regency Productions and Seagal/ Nasso Productions, is released by Warner Bros, is written by Richard Hatem and Matt Reeves, based on characters by J F Lawton, is shot by Robbie Greenberg, is produced by Arnon Milchan, Steven Seagal and Steve Perry, and is scored by Basil Poledouris.

The cast are Steven Seagal, Eric Bogosian, Katherine Heigl, Everett McGill, Morris Chestnut, Kurtwood Smith, Nick Mancuso, Brenda Bakke, Peter Greene, Andy Romano, and Dale Dye.

Release date: July 14, 1995.

It did fairly well at the box office. Costing $60 million, it earned $104 million.

The mystifying title is a railroading term that the train in the film is travelling through dark territory, a section of railroad track with no train signals where communications between train dispatchers and the railroad engineers are not possible.
