Director Jean Renoir’s delightful 1946 French short feature film Une Partie de Campagne [A Day in the Country] – poetic, humorous and evocative – is a cinematic milestone.
Set in 1860, Renoir’s carefully constructed, exquisitely attractive adaptation of a Guy de Maupassant story recounts a Parisian shop-owner’s family outing on a summer day to the French countryside, where the daughter Henriette (Sylvia Bataille) quickly forgets her future spouse and indulges in a love affair with a handsome young holiday-maker Henri (Georges D’Arnoux) at the inn.
Une Partie de Campagne [A Day in the Country] is directed by Jean Renoir, runs 45 minutes, is made by Pléiade and Panthéon Productions, is released by Film Traders (1947) (UK), is written by Jean Renoir, is shot in black and white by Claude Renoir and Jean Bourgoin, is produced by Pierre Braunberger and is scored by Joseph Kosma.
Renoir plays the restaurateur, Poulain. Also in the cast are Jane Marken as Madame Dufour, Paul Temps, Jacques B Brunius, André Gabriello as Monsieur Dufour, Gabrielle Fontan, Marguerite Renoir and Pierre Lestringuez.
It was released by BFI Video (2003) (UK) (DVD).
