Wimpy Chris O’Donnell muscles up for the 2000 thriller film Vertical Limit as Peter Garrett, a young climber who risks his life to save his sister Annie (Robin Tunney) and her treacherous companion Elliot Vaughn (Bill Paxton) trapped in an icy grave at the top of awesome peak K2.
This nailbiting high-anxiety, adrenaline-pumping mountain movie scales the heights of tension and terror as O’Donnell races against both time and the elements, since at 26,000 feet the duo are above the vertical limit of endurance where the human body can survive for long.
O’Donnell enlists the help of a motley crew, including eccentric, reclusive mountain man Scott Glenn, the exotic Izabella Scorupco, and a couple of audacious Aussies – lively disaster movie characters all. The action and drama are brilliantly staged by Martin (GoldenEye) Campbell, with superb, seamless stunts and special effects.
The cast are Chris O’Donnell, Robin Tunney, Bill Paxton, Scott Glenn, Izabella Scorupco, Nicholas Lea, Alexander Siddig, Temuera Morrison, Stuart Wilson, Augie Davis, Ben Mendelsohn, Roshan Seth, Rod Brown, David Hayman, Steve Le Marquand, and Robert Mammone.
Vertical Limit is directed by Martin Campbell, runs 124 minutes, is made by Columbia Pictures, is released by Sony Pictures Releasing, is written by Robert King and Terry Hayes, based on a story by Robert King, is shot by David Tattersall, is produced by Martin Campbell and Robert King, is scored by James Newton Howard, and designed by Jon Bunker.
It was a hit, grossing $215 million at the box office on a budget of $75 million after it was released on 8 December 2000 in the US by Columbia Pictures.
It was shot on location in Pakistan (location of K2); Queenstown, New Zealand; and the US.
