Director Claude Sautet’s 1974 French drama Vincent, François, Paul and the Others [Vincent, François, Paul et les Autres] stars Yves Montand, Michel Piccoli and Serge Reggiani as Vincent, François and Paul, three longtime buddies who look out for one another as middle age looms and they find that they are not young any more as they face various mid-life crises.
Vincent, François, Paul and the Others is an enjoyable French movie, which is low on plot and actual story, or originality, but high on acting brio by the special cast, convincing writing, character development and exploration of its themes and situations.
It also succeeds thanks to the charm and attention to detail brought to it by director Sautet.
It is written by Jean-Louis Dabadie, Claude Neron and Claude Sautet, based on a novel by Claude Néron, who appears in a cameo as a supporter during the boxing combat.
Also in the cast are Gérard Depardieu, Stéphane Audran (as Vincent’s wife), Marie Dubois (as François’s wife), Antonella Lualdi (as Paul’s wife), Umberto Orsini, Catherine Allégret and Ludmila Mikaël.
Vincent, François, Paul and the Others [Vincent, François, Paul et les Autres] is directed by Claude Sautet, runs 118 minutes, is made by Lira Films and President Produzioni, is released by Gaumont (1974) (France) and Joseph Green Pictures (1976) (US), is written by Jean-Loup Dabadie and Claude Sautet, based on a novel by Claude Néron, is shot in Eastmancolor by Jean Boffety and is scored by Philippe Sarde.
