‘A new kind of Jungle Drama. Actually filmed in Guatemala and featuring members of the savage Vicuni Indian tribe!’
Director Fernando Wagner’s 1960 exploitation adventure movie Virgin Sacrifice is set in the Amazon jungle and following the exploits of the great white hunter Samson (David DaLie) as he falls in love with the lovely native maiden Morena (Angélica Morales) and attempts to save her from an angry Indian tribe and from becoming a virgin sacrifice.
Despite being in colour and filmed on location in Guatemala, it is seriously low budget and of course really bad in a so-bad-it’s good kind of way.
This is how it starts: Samson says: ‘I am Samson the hunter. For the past 10 years, my friend Benson and I have scoured the jungle in search of animals for circuses and zoos. This time Benson came on ahead and set up camp near Fernando’s mission ground. I wasn’t anxious to return to this part of the jungle for it was here I witnessed the most horrible sight of my life.’ It then cuts to a scene of a woman being ritually sacrificed.
It is written by V J Rheims from an idea by David DaLie.
