We’re in Lecce, Puglia, south-east Italy, a glorious coastal village just by the gorgeous sea. Well that’s a good thing for a start!
Hannah Arterton stars as Taylor, who is summoned to this beauty spot by her sister Maddie (Annabel Scholey) for her wedding to drop-dead gorgeous Italian hunk Raf (Giulio Berruti). They’ve known each other just five weeks. Italians are quick workers, at least in the love department.
Unknown to Maddie, Raf is Taylor’s red-hot holiday flame of three years earlier. And then to complicate things further, Maddie’s oily ex Doug (Greg Wise) turns up.
Set to the music of popular hit songs from the 1980s, this Mamma Mia-style musical romance is the campest, light-as-air summer escapist entertainment. The likeable performers go to it with a will, and kick up quite a storm. Their singing and dancing are infectious good fun.
There’s an air of amateurishness about it, but that’s not really a problem. You’d need to like the old 80s pop tunes and a lot of romantic silliness. But for those who do, especially girls who just wanna have fun, this is pretty much ideal.
