Peter Sallis’s last role as Wallace was in Wallace and Gromit’s World of Invention in 2010, the same year he played Norman ‘Cleggy’ Clegg in the final episode of TV’s Last of the Summer Wine, being the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes since its inception in 1973.
World of Invention is a six 30-minute episode a science-themed miniseries featuring the animated claymation characters Wallace and Gromit, and made by Aardman Animations, with Nick Park as creator and executive producer. Wallace (voice of Peter Sallis) takes a light hearted and humorous look at real-life inventors, contraptions, gadgets and inventions, with the silent help of Gromit. The series shows the real, mind-boggling, machines and inventions from around the world that have supposedly influenced Wallace’s inventing career.
It is directed by Merlin Crossingham and written by Alex Pascall and Richard Hansome.
After this, at the age of 89, Sallis then retired from acting due to ill health, and died on 2 June 2017, aged 96.
Sallis said that his work as Wallace ‘raised his standing a few notches in the public eye’.
