What We Do in the Shadows *** (2014, Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh) – Movie Review

Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh and Jemaine Clement star as Viago, Deacon and Vlad (Jemaine Clement), vampire flatmates living in a suburban semi, in this New Zealand comedy horror mockumentary.

Viago is fed up because no one will do the dirty dishes and calls a house meeting, while Vlad is an old-style vampire into orgies and impaling and has no time for the washing up.

Writer-directors Clement and Waititi‘s screenplay works like a series of TV sitcom sketches, but no matter, it works. A bit of ingenuity on the visuals sparks up the look of the thing and makes it look like a real movie. The point is, What We Do in the Shadows is funny – laughed a lot!

Vampire comedies are difficult to do, so they did well and this one’s carved out its own little amusing niche. Actually, one or two bits of it are hilarious. There’s plenty of room for a sequel if it does well – and it should.
