‘Her dream was to coach high school football. Her nightmare was Central High.’

Director Michael Ritchie’s 1986 film Wildcats stars Goldie Hawn as Molly, a girls’ PT teacher track coach who becomes an American football coach for a tough Chicago inner-city high school, in this routine, rather hollow and ineffectual comedy with a premise and a plotline we have seen many times before.

Wildcats offers some simple chuckles, with a game and lively cast doing their darnedest to spark it up and raise laughs. But Ezra Sacks’s plodding, production-line script lets Goldie down and her character’s daffy dottiness persona is perilously exposed.

You expect more from Ritchie, talented director of Smile and The Bad News Bears.

Also in the cast are Swoosie Kurtz, Robyn Lively, Brandy Gold, James Keach, Bruce McGill, M Emmet Walsh, Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Ann Doran, Gloria Stuart, L L Cool J, Nipsey Russell, Mykelti Williamson, George Wyner, and Jan Hooks.

The movie was shot in summer with temperatures in the eighties but extras were asked to arrive in winter gear and pretend it was cold.
