You’ll Find Out ** (1940, Kay Kyser, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi, Dennis O’Keefe, Ginny Simms, Helen Parrish, Alma Kruger) – Classic Movie Review 12,423

Co-writer/ director David Butler’s fairly entertaining 1940 RKO black and white mystery-comedy musical film You’ll Find Out stars Kay Kyser, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi, Dennis O’Keefe, Ginny Simms, Helen Parrish and Alma Kruger. It is one of the many old dark house thriller spoofs that were popular at the time.

Kay Kyser’s hepcat band are booked to play for pretty débutante Helen Parrish’s 21st birthday bash at a spooky house, haunted by as splendid a trio of villains as Hollywood ever mustered – Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Bela Lugosi. The band finds it has to hunt down a killer to save the birthday girl’s life.

All those who want to enjoy the chiller team, beware: although RKO’s musical mystery spoof is bouncy and good natured, it is also slow off the mark and over-extended. Nevertheless, with this cast, it is certainly worth a try though. The clutch of songs includes the Oscar-nominated ‘I’d Know You Anywhere’.

Kay Kyser, Henry Babbitt, Ish Kabibble (aka M A Bogue), Ginny Simms, Sully Mason all appear as themselves. Also in the cast are Jeff Corey, Louise Currie, Larry McGrath, Leonard Mudie, Frank O’Connor, Frank Mills, Bess Flowers, and Eleanor Lawson.
