Director George Englund’s mighty strange 1971 rock ‘n’ roll ‘n’ drugs Western film Zachariah stars John Rubinstein as Zachariah, who sets out with his friend Matthew (Don Johnson) to become gunfighters, joining with the rock band Crackers (Country Joe and the Fish). Patricia Quinn also stars, as Belle Starr.
An era-defining movie, though long forgotten, it could be a lot of unfathomable crazy fun for those in the spirit and in the mood. Writers Philip Austin, Peter Bergman, Joe Massot, David Ossman, and Phil Proctor pack in acid, surreal visions and electric guitars to their Wild West version of Hermann Hesse’s novel.
Also in the cast are Elvin Jones, Doug Kershaw, William Challee, Robert Ball and Dick Van Patten.
Apparently the US box office gross was $62,300.
