Director Ruben Fleischer’s enjoyable 2019 American post-apocalyptic zombie comedy film sequel Zombieland: Double Tap was made in Atlanta from January to March in 2019. It happily reunites the gang of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone 10 years after the first film Zombieland.
Ten years after the first zombie outbreak, Tallahassee (Harrelson), Columbus (Eisenberg) and Wichita (Stone) face new strains of evolved zombies and encounter other survivors on their way from the White House to Graceland to find Wichita’s rebellious younger sister Little Rock (Breslin).
Returning Harrelson and Eisenberg are again a highly energised, huge fun star pair, Emma Stone is outstandingly funny as the hardened survivor Wichita, and the appealing Zoey Deutch is an excellent addition to the cast as the dumb blonde Madison. With its freshness gone, the film doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the original, but very nearly, with plenty of laughs scattered throughout, considerable lively invention in the script written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and David Callaham, and dynamic direction by returning director Ruben Fleischer, as well as a big action finish too.
The title is a reference to rule number 2 in Zombieland.
Zombieland: Double Tap premiered in Los Angeles on 10 October 2019 and was released in the US on 18 October 2019 by Sony Pictures Releasing. Its $125 million worldwide gross surpassed the first film’s $102.4 million. The first film was the highest grossing zombie movie in the US until the release of World War Z (2013).
The cast are Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee, Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus, Emma Stone as Wichita/ Krista, Abigail Breslin as Little Rock, Rosario Dawson as Nevada, Zoey Deutch as Madison, Luke Wilson as Albuquerque, Avan Jogia as Berkeley, Thomas Middleditch as Flagstaff, and Bill Murray reprising his role as a fictionalized version of himself in a mid-credits scene.
