Thanks to more brilliant cinema trickery, Eddie Murphy is back as the overweight chemistry professor Sherman Klump and every member of the portly family in a hit-and-miss sequel to the original 1996 The Nutty Professor comedy remake.
Diretor Peter Segal’s 2000 comedy sequel, which sees bumbling scientist Sherman decide to get married, has a lot of big laughs, but it again spoils itself by being very crude and forced.
Vintage character actress Kathleen Freeman (1919–2001), who played in the original 1963 Jerry Lewis The Nutty Professor, plays a nosy neighbour.
Also in the cast are Janet Jackson, Larry Miller, John Ales, Richard Gant, Anna Maria Horsford, Melinda McGraw, Jamal Mixon, Gabriel Williams, Chris Elliott, Duffy Taylor, Freda Payne, Sylvester Jenkins and Wanda Sykes.
The story is by Steve Oedekerk, David Sheffield, and Barry W Blaustein, based on the characters created by Jerry Lewis. The film is written by David Sheffield, Barry W Blaustein, Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz, shot by Dean Semler, produced by Brian Glazer, scored by David Newman and designed by Greg Papalia.
It is rated PG-13 for crude humour and sex-related material.
